I feel like this first post of the year anticipated what was to come pretty well!<\/p>\n\n\n\n I joke, of course\u2026 but honestly, this Mensa calendar was a\nreally great thing for me. (Thanks, Renee!) Even if it was just for five\nminutes a day, I got to feel smart\u2026 and that\u2019s a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Evan and I go to see \u2018A Kevin McDonald with an Evening\u2019 at the Rivoli. He remains one of the most naturally funny people ever (Kevin, not Evan, who\u2019s just okay), and he\u2019s certainly got stories to tell. (The Shrink 2020!) And Bruce McCulloch opened for him, allowing me to make this post:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Huzzah for technicalities!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Okay, this is just a POSSIBLE preview of things to come. I\nstill haven\u2019t really decided. But I do make this joke, which I like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n A standup joke, perhaps?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Later that month, Evan and Jen take the family to see The\nPlay That Goes Wrong. I think the moral is that when I tell people I don\u2019t like\nfarce, they should believe me and not argue that the one they have in mind is\ndifferent. Still, a nice thing\u2026 and I did like the farce episode of Party Down,\nso I guess there is at least ONE exception!<\/p>\n\n\n\n And finally, a post no one much cared for, but I still feel\nthere\u2019s something there, and since it will continue to come up\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n February:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I take part in a genetic research study, where for a full\nday, every three hours I have blood drawn and have an MRI. I think I mostly did\nit for the experience and the story (even though the previous sentence is basically\nthe story)\u2026 and the money helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pete takes me to a DGC event where I learn all about Star\nTrek: Discovery. Neat!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two tweets, one in which I get excited about something that\nturns out not to be a big deal, and one which I think is funny, regardless of\nits reception!<\/p>\n\n\n\n And later in the month, the Oscars. I believe I tied with Mom in the family pool and won the pool at work. I *work* in the industry! (I don\u2019t really. It\u2019s just a fun thing to say.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n March:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Puns meet politics!<\/p>\n\n\n\n And since the world isn\u2019t making me any less cynical\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n After years of us all chanting it and only me having seen\nit, I invite a group of friends over to watch Barton Fink! (Simpsons\u2019 fans will\nunderstand the chanting.) The movie is not the biggest hit (and as a writer,\nIan may have felt a little targeted), but the night is a delight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I play squash with Hillary, then a few days later with Evan.\nThey\u2019re my first squash games in forever. As I write this, I realize I wanted\nto play more, then didn\u2019t. But hopefully I will!<\/p>\n\n\n\n A pretty low-key birthday. I assume, because I can\u2019t actually remember. I guess it\u2019s an important one in the Hitch Hiker\u2019s Guide to the Galaxy sense?<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n April:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n After months of making us wait, Toronto Pho opens around the corner from work. A very welcome addition\u2026 though this decorating choice evokes a dark laugh on the inside every time I see it\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n I lose at March Madness once again, this time to a\nfour-year-old. Which would be embarrassing enough, but he also beat us all when\nhe was two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I take this picture to commemorate the time I passed muster. (Yes, me dumb!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n I see Go on the big screen, possibly for the first time. Twentieth\nanniversary, so I guess I\u2019m old?<\/p>\n\n\n\n I also see Jen do standup (for what I think was her first\nnon-class show) at Dawn Patrol. Though I\u2019m a little intimidated by how good she\nis right out of the gate, I start wondering if it\u2019s something I should try. At\nthis point, I\u2019m still wondering\u2026 but I\u2019ve also started compiling and organizing,\nso it\u2019s more than speculation. Guess we\u2019ll see what happens in next year\u2019s\npost!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Passover happens. Details are lost to memory and lazy research, but this is kind of funny, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n After years of having insurance and basically only using it\nfor dental, I have an optometrist appointment. (This\u2019ll pay off later. Kind\nof.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then late in the month, a bunch of nerds go to see\nAvengers: Endgame. I liked it\u2026 and them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Hershfield men catch Buddy Guy at Roy Thomson Hall. If anyone ever assumes based on the name that he\u2019s a made-up blues man, well, now we can confidently say he exists!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tim Burns is nice enough to meet for lunch and talk \u2018the\nbiz.\u2019 Though my momentum feels largely stalled on that front, it\u2019s always good\nto stoke the coals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n May:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n At long last, a mini-vacation. Evan and I spend a long weekend in Halifax\/Dartmouth to celebrate Brad\u2019s birthday. I don\u2019t know what I would do if I moved there\u2026 but I can see the appeal. Anyway, here are a few pictures, one for the Archer fans and one for the medium-old-school SNL fans. (And yes, the party had a theme.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Loose cannons! Also the party was at the Mic Mac AAC, which\nI mention mostly because it\u2019s a very specific regional reference I will have to\ndrop at some point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Later, in the month, I go from visitor to host. First,\nthere\u2019s a McGill reunion when Sam Sewall swings through (always a good time). A\nfew days later, Dave is in town, and I show off some Leslieville, including the\nSaulter Street Brewery and the Broadview Hotel rooftop bar. Classy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Game of Thrones ends. I could rant some, but I\u2019ll leave it\nat this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Larry\u2019s 70th<\/sup>. Because Grandma is in poor health, the big party is cancelled\u2026 but we will not deny ourselves schnitzel! Also we realize that since the price of a wiener schnitzel has been creeping up, the cost of a wooden platter for two is actually a little less than the cost of two schnitzels. I think you know where this is going\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n June:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Ian (the one from work) has his annual BBQ. Since the move,\nwe rarely all hang out, so it\u2019s a nice little refresher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Having renewed my friendship with the lovely Jenny earlier\nin the year, I am invited to watch The Bachelorette with Tom, Lindsay, and her.\nThough I will have to repress my natural instinct to eeyore, it is fairly\nhabit-forming, and a nice new ritual. (I mean, I check in and out, because you\neasily can until the end\u2026 but still, I am forever invested in Hannah and\nforever headshaking at Luke P.!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Moving on\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ian invites me to see Ghostbusters in Concert, with a ticket\nJason couldn\u2019t use. (Thanks to both!) We meet up for drinks beforehand, and I\narrive first, which is when this happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But to be clear, the highlight is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Social media continues to be good and bad. But it does seem\nlike I have some feelings about it\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n Anyway, within a week of that, THE RAPTORS WIN IT ALL! I\nhaven\u2019t mentioned it, but obviously, I watch A LOT of basketball in the months\nleading up to this, and it\u2019s all pretty glorious. My personal highlight from\nthis all happens in December (Stay tuned!), but for now, I\u2019ll just say this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Huzzah!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Also cause for celebration: Jason and I follow through on\nour plan for an East Toronto Brew Pub Crawl! I helped quite a bit, but most of\nthe credit goes to him. With ESPECIAL credit for commissioning this incredible\nmap\/itinerary!<\/p>\n\n\n\n There\u2019s actually a version with times on it and everything,\nbut since that one includes his home address (where we had a Mortal Kombat\ntourney after breakfast and beers at Louis Cifer), this is the map I\u2019m sharing.\nA very intoxicating day, and thanks to flights, dozens of beers are sampled!\n(Though I haven\u2019t been back since, Rorshach blew my mind.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Okay. Putting in a transition sentence between paragraphs,\nbecause sadly, near the end of the month\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n My Grandma Vera passes away. At age 96, and following\nseveral years of mental decline, so very mixed feelings. Still, never easy to\nlose someone who you love and who loved you. She\u2019s also my last grandparent,\nand while it\u2019s crazy that I had one into my forties, I can\u2019t help but realize\nthe next losses will come from the next generation\u2026 and that\u2019s very bracing. At\nany rate, I am reminded of her constantly, not just by our similarities, but by\na little shrine to my life I have in my bedroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s my intramural hockey sweater (Go, Rez Dogs!), a bra that was a cast gift from the first play I directed, and a sweater my grandma knitted me. Though I\u2019ve got some good years ahead of me, knock on wood, it reminds me I\u2019ve had a life, and there’s been some love in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n July:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I see James live in concert. For some reason, it\u2019s not as\nexuberant an experience as I was hoping for, but I do love that band and they\u2019ve\nstill got serious chops. Also, Sean is there with his daughter, and it\u2019s her\nfirst concert, so that\u2019s a pretty cool moment. That said, when the choice was\nbetween a ride or seeing the Psychedelic Furs finish their set, I pick the\nride. So make of that what you will. At any rate\u2026 James!<\/p>\n\n\n\n For her birthday (though not ON her birthday), Evan, Jen and\nI take Mom to the Science Centre to watch Superpower Dogs on IMAX. Though I do\nfind myself distracted thinking about someone who used to work there, I focus enough\nto get reinforcement on our family\u2019s wise decision to be dog people!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fringe happens. I hope I saw more plays than I can remember\n(the years blend together!), but I know I saw the Lauras, because I remember\nthinking that was funny. Specifically, I saw Laura Anne Harris in Destiny, USA,\nand Laura Bailey in Clitoria. Both very good, and reminders of my fringe theatre\nglory!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Though I am not technically in a show, I DO get a black eye\nat basketball around then, and get to spend a few days pretending I\u2019m in Fight\nClub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Around that time, a visit from Becky! This was a long time\ncoming, as we haven\u2019t seen each other in YEARS, since my last visit to New\nYork. (Where she no longer lives.) Though bad weather takes some of the shine\noff things, I drag her all over the city, and we talk and drink a bunch. She\u2019s\nsomeone I\u2019m very glad to know, and I am already looking forward to our next\nreunion. (Hopefully in America, though I\u2019m waiting for sanity to be restored.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n The day after my Becky day, I see the new Second City revue\nWalking on Bombshells and hang out post-show with my buddy Chris and old\nshowmate Stacey. The day after that, drinks with Jess. The day after that, I\nsee Into the Spiderverse with Ian. The day after that, basketball. The day\nafter that, a movie night at Robin\u2019s, where I believe we watched Trading\nPlaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I mention all this because I think that\u2019s about as social a\nstretch as an introvert like me can manage! Kudos to all involved for being\npeople I can spend time with!<\/p>\n\n\n\n One last thing for July. The family went to Sunset Grill in\nthe Beaches (yes, plural, rebranding exercise be damned!), as we\u2019re wont to do,\nand I noticed something interesting about the omelette prices. I\u2019ll give you a\nsecond to see if you can spot it on your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Give up? (Or \u201cGet it?\u201d I don\u2019t want to presume you didn\u2019t.)\nThe vast majority of omelettes are cheaper if you \u201ccreate your own\u201d. The Green\nOmelette by a full two dollars! So I guess the question is, how much is it\nworth to you not to be \u201cthat guy\u201d? In my case, the Sunset Omelette, it was\nworth the fifty cents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Okay, I lied. One more thing for July, just because I made\nmyself laugh:<\/p>\n\n\n\n August:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n A reunion a LONG time in the making! Over a decade! Joanna\ncomes to town, and I am reminded of the wonder that is old friends: so much\nchanges, so much remains the same! As an aside, it may be my lack of kids AND\nmoisturizer, but I always feel like I\u2019ve aged the least personally and the most\nphysically. For the latter, judge for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I manage to get onto another downtown rooftop for some cool\npeople drinking. At least once a summer, whether I want to or not. And I almost\nalways do!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Of course, days later, our parent company has us over for\ndrinks and some BBQ on THEIR rooftop. Mind you, we\u2019re basically their hillbilly\ncousins from the sticks, welcome only because our women are hot. Or maybe\nthat\u2019s just my take. Regardless, I live up to that understanding by stuffing my\nface then running off early. (It was a basketball night!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Anyway, here\u2019s an August post I quite liked. (I\u2019m also sharing\nit because the hilarious Josh Gondelman just made a similar joke on Twitter,\nand while it\u2019s parallel thinking, I want it on the record that I thought this\nthought first, so I can maybe use it in standup. That\u2019s how this works, right?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then it was cottage time. Back to the Armstrongs again, and a good, laid-back, light-on-guests time had by all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n One funny thing: I burned a pair of pants. Intentionally. When I was getting my wedding suit, Evan\u2019s friend Matt gifted me a fancy dress shirt, on the condition I burn the pants from my original suit. (The fit offended him.) In what is either a touch of karma or a touch of irony, the pants from my NEW suit have gone missing. Which is bizarre. Hopefully, they\u2019ll turn up, but either way, I watched my \u2018pants on fire\u2019, and I ain\u2019t lying!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then back to work. I won\u2019t say the effect of the cottage\nwore off too quickly\u2026 but this was a thought I had within a week of my return\nto civilization:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Johnny and Marla have a wedding dinner. Everything is very\ntasty, though I would expect no less. I\u2019ll mostly remember duck being chopped\nup next to our table. How\u2019ve I gone this long without experiencing this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n I apply for the Saturday Night Live ticket lottery again. As\nof now, it still hasn\u2019t happened. But I guess I\u2019ll keep doing it until it does,\nbecause that feels like how life works, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Also, I think I should go, because I saw a Kids in the Hall taping, so this would round out my comedy name-dropping possibilities. Plus, I keep having funny thoughts like this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n And on the last night of August, Kat and I take in an\noutdoors screening of Back to the Future. Because it\u2019s there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n September:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Another September, another TIFF! Though, despite the exclamation point, I didn\u2019t see much. And while I liked what I saw \u2013 David Copperfield and How to Build a Girl \u2013 I wasn\u2019t really feeling it this year. But hey, it\u2019s a blog, so here are pictures showing how close I got to famous people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Around then, Tom and Lindsay have something of a housewarming. They live around the corner from the folks\u2019, so it makes me extra-happy, and I hope to visit that backyard and fireplace for years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another September 8th<\/sup>, another iteration of this\npost! Okay, there seem to be diminishing returns from the audience, but it\nstill makes me smile and it marks a real anniversary, so what the hell. See you\nagain next year, post!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Also that day, the family heads down to Stratford to see\nHenry VIII. It was my idea to see a lesser work, and, well, it was lesser. But\na noble venture, says I!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Through the series of tubes that is the internet, my McGill\nTwenty Year Reunion planning starts. So far, it\u2019s looking like August may be\nthe choice of champions. We shall see\u2026 but something to look forward to!<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the 19th<\/sup>, I have\u2026 Jury Duty! I\u2019m ambivalent about whether I want\nto be on a jury, but it turns out to be a moot point. Eventually. First, we\u2019re\ndirected to go directly to a courtroom, my first time making it that far;\npreviously, I just made it to the holding room. While we wait, the bailiff\ntells us that it\u2019s the biggest courtroom in Ontario and that the trial we\u2019re\nbeing panelled for is expected to last at least six weeks. (I could be getting\nthat wrong. I mostly remember the gasp!) Then the judge comes in, and after\nthanking us and noting that serving on a jury is a sacred duty, he explains\nthat due to some procedural things and timing issues, there\u2019s another panel\nscheduled for closer to the trial date that no longer has a case attached to\nit. So we\u2019re all free to go! (Oh, the relief in that room!) Best of all, the\nwhole thing took two-and-a-half hours, almost exactly the time to not make it\nworth going in to work!<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is also the first day of JFL 42. And me, Evan, and Jen\nwent at the festival with gusto. Of course, the credit system makes it\nbasically All You Can See, so we did. Here\u2019s who I saw, in the order I saw\nthem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pretty crazy lineup, right? Mind you, seeing that much,\nthere was a lot of \u201cappreciating this is funny\u201d rather than \u201claughing\u201d\u2026 but\nhey, comedy is a hobby\/business of mine too, so that\u2019s still well worth it.\nAlso, my baby stepping towards standup gets a little more of a nudge, and I do some\nvaluable homework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here\u2019s a picture:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Finally, a Pharoah who likes the Jews!<\/p>\n\n\n\n My McGill reunion streak continues with a visit by Rachel.\nGranted, it had only been a few years since I\u2019d seen her, but hey, it\u2019s always\nspecial. Here\u2019s a picture, showing that my selfie game has marginally improved.\nIf nothing else, my arms are long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the 28th<\/sup>, I attend the Make \u2018em Laugh for 90 Minutes workshop. So now\nI HAVE to write a screenplay. I just HAVE to!<\/p>\n\n\n\n The next day, we go for Chinese as a family, and I get this\nfortune which makes me laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Thanks for the future tense, fortune cookie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then Rosh Hashanah, which falls on Evan\u2019s birthday. He\ncelebrates by not coming. Da jarit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n October:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Another big concert: Thrush Hermit! It involved some stress,\nbecause I got two tickets months before, confident that I knew people who\u2019d be\ninto it. Only to find out it\u2019s a little more niche than I assumed. But\nGreenstein steps up, and we enjoy some fine tunes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then later that month, I\u2019m the one (well, one of the ones) making sweet music. Yes, after years of threatening it and thinking about it, I make it out to a Choir! Choir! Choir! (For those not in the know, this is an ongoing event where a bunch of people congregate and become a choir for a night, learning a song and performing it as a group.) What may have prompted me to finally go was having someone to go with (thanks, Jenny!), but also, it was the fiftieth anniversary of Abbey Road, so they did Something. How could I miss that?<\/p>\n\n\n\n A few days later, on Twitter, I make what I believe is\ncalled a \u2018witty rejoinder.\u2019 It draws valued praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Continuing my string of firsts, I finally make it out to one of the Christie Pits basketball games. And the people I know didn\u2019t show up, so I\u2019m playing with mostly strangers. But a few familiar faces, and all friendly, and a good time had by all. No Stranger Danger here!<\/p>\n\n\n\n A few days later, a federal election. Though I get a little\nfrustrated with people who don\u2019t seem to know how strategic voting can work\n(e.g. in a safe riding, you can vote your conscience), it\u2019s the rare election\nthese days that doesn\u2019t end with the worst-case scenario, so I\u2019ll take it. Even\nthough the Hershfields\u2019 attempt to sway the vote through fashion did nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A few days after THAT, I buy a pair of jeans. Which I\nmention only because it was the most extreme markdown I\u2019ve ever seen. OVER 95%,\nBABY!<\/p>\n\n\n\n November:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Someone manages to drive through a window at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s very exciting short-term, pretty inconvenient long-term. It also means I move from open-concept with a window to my own office without one, so a lateral move, I suppose? <\/p>\n\n\n\n Boris Mortz jams for the first time. It\u2019s my bro\u2019s friends,\nwho are more loosey-goosey, less rehearsey than I\u2019m used to. But there are\nworse ways to spend an evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n After a day of facial fashion show with Evan and Jen a few weeks earlier, I get new glasses. (It\u2019d been years!) We do the appropriate Simpsons routine ad nauseum. (I probably miss my old glasses\u2026)<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe they make me smarter, because I do a take on a Twitter\nmeme that strikes myself as amusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n I see that Pearl Court is closing, and since it\u2019s supposedly\nthe best Chinese food on the Gerrard Chinatown, and I\u2019m kicking myself for\nnever having gone, I leap into action. Will and I agree dim sum must be had,\nand we moved to rally some troops. Those troops turn out to be Jason, and the\nthree of us eat a lot of dim sum and basically shut the place down. Better late\nthan never!<\/p>\n\n\n\n And I end the month by directing at the 24 Hour Sketch Fest!\nIt\u2019s my first time doing it as a director, and it\u2019s a ton of fun. Nice to\nspread some wisdom and help my lovely team bring their gold to the stage.\nRihanna-matopeia! (That\u2019s what I named the team , as we had a running Rihanna\ntheme. Alas, we got announced as Rihanna-topia\u2026 which is still not bad.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n December:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The office holiday party. Kind of a meh experience for me. I\u2019d\nmuch rather have dancing than a casino. But hey, different strokes. And this\nyear, I was one of the very sober people helping the very wrecked people\u2026 so in\ntheory, I can get wrecked next year? (I do have an \u2018every second year\u2019 streak\ngoing.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n So remember when I said my personal connection to the\nRaptors\u2019 championship would happen in December? Well, my buddy Myles (who also\nplays basketball with us) is an MLSE exec, so he was able to make this moment\nhappen for me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n To be clear, I didn\u2019t get to keep it. Nor could my scrawny arms handle that much weight on a regular basis. But for a brief shining moment, my ring finger was a champion!<\/p>\n\n\n\n The usual suspects gather to close out the Star Wars series\nwith an opening night screening of Rise of Skywalker. The movie is pretty much\nhot garbage, in my humble but not too humble opinion\u2026 but the company is a\ndelight!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because of the origins of this blog, I feel I should mention\nthat I interview for the Second City\u2019s new Directing Program\u2026 and do not get\nin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Anyhoo\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n Christmas is a nice event at the house. New Year\u2019s Eve, I\nuse a spare ticket my parents have to see Uncut Gems with them, then just go\nhome and watch Inside Llewyn Davis. Midnight is not noted. Maybe I should have\nforced myself to go out\u2026 but I was happy to just run out the clock, so to\nspeak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Well, fingers crossed for a more groovy year in 2020, though\nI\u2019ll settle for survival. And because I don\u2019t want to end on THAT note, I\u2019ll\nend on this one instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n I\u2019m not going to lie (particularly since I\u2019m not sure anyone but me reads this): 2019 was not a great year for me. I feel like I spent much of it in a light-to-heavy funk.
