{"id":20,"date":"2008-11-28T00:00:23","date_gmt":"2008-11-28T05:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/scatteredflurries.com\/?p=20"},"modified":"2008-12-12T22:57:06","modified_gmt":"2008-12-13T03:57:06","slug":"what-happened-in-chicago-in-roughly-chronological-order","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scatteredflurries.com\/?p=20","title":{"rendered":"What happened in Chicago, in roughly chronological order"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I will stop using the bullets at some point, I&#8217;m sure, but for now, they&#8217;re getting the job done.<\/p>\n<p>Things I did:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I had a visit with Chris Dingwall.\u00a0 Sadly, just the one, on my first night in town, as he was skipping town for New York the next day.\u00a0 But he was in fine fettle, and I was very glad to see him.\u00a0 I now regret not taking a lock of hair.<\/li>\n<li>I saw the first of a chain of banks called Fifth Third Bank.\u00a0 The name makes me giggle.<\/li>\n<li>I walked around Wrigley Field.\u00a0 Literally, all sides.\u00a0 Something that&#8217;s awesome is that it&#8217;s so residential, most of the apartment buildings across the street have set up bleachers on their roofs from which you can see the field. \u00a0 Plus there&#8217;s one part where you can see onto the field from the street.\u00a0 It feels like history, if only because I can&#8217;t imagine anyone ever building a stadium that would allow those things again.\u00a0 Maybe I just haven&#8217;t seen enough cities&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>I started reading<strong> American Gods<\/strong> by Neil Gaiman.\u00a0 So far, not the type of book I normally read, but I&#8217;m enjoying.<\/li>\n<li>Ashley and I have &#8220;discovered&#8221; our mutual love for the &#8220;Bumdiyada&#8221; Discovery ad.\u00a0 At the least, we will make our cast mates love it.\u00a0 But if we get ambitious, it will be everywhere.<\/li>\n<li>I saw Lauren perform in the Second City show.\u00a0 Their gain is our loss.\u00a0\u00a0 I won&#8217;t spoil any moments for those who might be seeing the show, but Pat O&#8217;Brien (or, as some call him, POB&#8230;that&#8217;s right, Toronto, other cities have performers with acronyms too!) had some definite wish-I-wrote-it moments for me.<\/li>\n<li>Deep dish pizza turns out to be a bit of a disappointment.\u00a0 I still love fat, though.\u00a0 And the waitress was cute, and it was one of those restaurants where you write on the walls, so Nate and I got our names on a &#8220;painting&#8221; of John Belushi.\u00a0 So a little bit of Chicago has been marked.<\/li>\n<li>I went up the Hancock.\u00a0 I&#8217;d done it before, but still, quite a view!<\/li>\n<li>I saw &#8220;Messing with a Friend&#8221; at the Annoyance.\u00a0 Fun little theatre.\u00a0 I&#8217;m still not entirely sold on the Annoyance philosophy (though I think it&#8217;s a great tool to keep in the back pocket, and still think Mick Napier&#8217;s book is the best I&#8217;ve read on improv).\u00a0 But it was great to see a show adhering to that philosophy performed by masters, and good times were had.<\/li>\n<li>I walked down Clark from Waveland to Oak, then walked down Oak to Michigan.\u00a0\u00a0 That&#8217;s where the Drake Hotel is.\u00a0 I used their pay phone to call the family, then I sat in an inner lobby for awhile, doing a combination of people-watching and drifting off to sleep.\u00a0 The people-watching was fascinating, a lot of families doing fancy Thanksgivings, some boors, but mostly cuteness.\u00a0 I then walked down Michigan as far as Roosevelt.\u00a0 Very scenic.\u00a0 According to Google Maps, I went about 7.2 miles.\u00a0 I enjoy Chicago.<\/li>\n<li>Americans seem to take their Thanksgiving quite seriously.\u00a0 Damn near everything was closed.\u00a0 In what would be ironic to someone with the racial awareness of Christopher Columbus, the only thing that was consistently open were Indian restaurants.\u00a0 Thinking it might be awhile, I had some chicken tikka masala and nan bread for dinner.\u00a0 Atraditional, yes, but tasty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Well, that&#8217;s it for Chicago.\u00a0 First thing in the a.m., we&#8217;re off to Miami and hopping onboard.\u00a0\u00a0 But before I go, I thought I&#8217;d introduce you to the cast.\u00a0 Should come in handy for future posts.<\/p>\n<p>Study it well: <a href=\"http:\/\/secondcity.com\/?id=touring\/ncl\/jewel\/cast\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/secondcity.com\/?id=touring\/ncl\/jewel\/cast<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I will stop using the bullets at some point, I&#8217;m sure, but for now, they&#8217;re getting the job done.
